## Best Palm Springs Shutter Companies Compared

The best shutter company for a Palm Springs home is the one that can answer four questions clearly: what the shutter is made of, who builds it, who installs it, and what the warranty covers in desert heat. Palm Springs homeowners can choose among local manufacturers, national retailers, and California manufacturers that serve the Coachella Valley. This guide compares them on those four points. It is written by Elizabeth Shutters, one of the companies on the list.

I should say this first. We build [custom shutters](https://elizabethshutters.com/custom-shutters-handcrafted-in-california/) in Colton, about an hour west of Palm Springs, and we install them across the Coachella Valley. So this is a comparison written by one of the companies being compared.

That is why I am not going to rank anyone. What I can do, after more than forty years of building shutters in Southern California, is tell you exactly which questions separate one company from another in a desert climate. Ask them of every company here, including us. If a company cannot answer, that is your answer.

## What the desert does to custom shutters

Palm Springs is harder on a shutter than almost anywhere else we work. Summer afternoons run well above 100 degrees. The air is dry. West-facing glass takes direct sun for hours, and the temperature at the window swings widely between day and night.

Three things fail first under those conditions. Finishes fade or chalk when the coating is thin. Glue joints can open as material dries and cycles. Panels can drift out of square, which shows up as louvers that no longer close evenly and gaps of light at the frame.

None of that is visible in a showroom. It shows up in year three or year five, on the window that faces the afternoon sun. **The rule: judge a shutter by how it is built and finished, because that is what the desert tests.**

One honest note on heat. Closed shutters do [reduce heat at the window](https://insights.elizabethshutters.com/blog/do-shutters-reduce-heat-las-vegas), but the glass itself and exterior shading do more. Any company that promises shutters alone will fix a hot room is overselling.

## The four questions that separate custom shutter companies

| Question | Why it matters in Palm Springs | What a clear answer sounds like |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **What is the shutter made of?** | Material decides how the panel holds its shape through dry heat and whether it can be repaired later. | A specific material: whole basswood, finger-jointed basswood, hardwood, synthetic, or composite. "Real wood" and "solid wood" are not specific. |
| **Who builds it?** | A company that builds its own product controls the drying, machining and finish. A dealer depends on a supplier. | The name and location of the workshop or the manufacturer. |
| **Who installs it?** | Shutters are fitted to the opening. The installer decides whether it looks built in. | Company employees, or a named subcontractor. Either can do good work. You should know which. |
| **What does the warranty cover?** | "Lifetime warranty" has no fixed meaning on shutters. Finish and sun exposure are where the fine print lives. | What is covered, what is excluded, and who comes to your home when something needs attention. |

On material, the distinction most homeowners never hear about is whole wood versus finger-jointed wood. Finger-jointed basswood is short pieces glued end to end, and it is often sold as "solid basswood." It can be a sound choice for painted shutters. Every one of those joints is also a glue line, and glue lines are what dry heat works on. We cover the full comparison in our guide to [whole basswood and synthetic shutters](https://insights.elizabethshutters.com/blog/whole-basswood-vs-polywood-shutters).

On warranty, read the document before you sign. Our article on [what a lifetime warranty covers](https://insights.elizabethshutters.com/blog/shutter-lifetime-warranty) lists the questions worth asking.

## Palm Springs shutter companies at a glance

These are five companies a Palm Springs homeowner is likely to come across, grouped by how they operate. The descriptions come from each company's own public website or listings as of October 2026. The last column is the question I would ask each one.

| Company | Type | What it says publicly | Ask this |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Sullivan's Shutter Factory** | Local manufacturer, Indio | Designs, measures, manufactures and installs custom wood shutters, with a showroom factory open to visitors. | Is the wood whole or finger-jointed, and what finish is used for west-facing windows? |
| **The Shutter Guys & Blinds** | Local manufacturer and window treatment company, Palm Desert | Family-owned, in business since 2003, makes shutters locally and also sells shades and draperies. Lists a lifetime warranty on shutters. | What material are the shutters, and what does the lifetime warranty exclude? |
| **Budget Blinds of Coachella Valley** | Local franchise of a national brand | Sells shutters alongside blinds, shades and drapery, with in-home consultations. | Who manufactures the shutter line you are quoting, in what material, and who installs it? |
| **3 Day Blinds** | National retailer serving Palm Springs | Sells custom shutters, shades, blinds and drapes through local design consultants. | Where are the shutters built, in what material, and who services them after installation? |
| **Elizabeth Shutters** | California manufacturer, Colton | Builds shutters from whole basswood in its own workshop and installs with its own employees. Founded in 1981. | Ask us the same four questions. We will answer them in writing. |

Company details change. Confirm material, installation and warranty terms directly with each company before you decide.

### Local manufacturers

A shop in the valley is close by, and you can often walk the floor and see how the shutters are made. That is worth doing. Take the material question with you and look at an unpainted panel if they will show you one.

### National retailers and franchises

These companies carry a full range of window treatments. If you want shutters in the living room, shades in the bedrooms and drapery in the dining room from one order, that range is a real convenience. The shutter itself usually comes from a supplier, so ask who makes it.

### California manufacturers serving the valley

This is where we sit. We build to your measured openings in Colton and send our own installers. The trade-off is that our workshop is an hour away, so the consultation comes to you and not the other way around.

## Matching shutters to Palm Springs architecture

Palm Springs is a mid-century city. Low roofs, clerestory windows, and walls of glass that open to the pool. The connection between inside and outside is the whole point of the house, so a shutter has to disappear when it is open and perform precisely when it is closed.

That calls for large louvers. On mid-century and contemporary homes we recommend 4.5 or 5.5 inch louvers, which give fewer slats and a cleaner view. Small louvers make a glass wall look busy. Sliding glass doors usually take [folding or bypass panels](https://insights.elizabethshutters.com/blog/shutters-for-sliding-glass-doors), depending on clearance and how often the door is used.

Spanish Revival homes in the older neighborhoods are different. Arched openings need panels shaped to the actual arch, built from a template of your window. Ask any company specifically how it handles the arch before signing anything.

## How to compare quotes

Two quotes for the same house can differ by a wide margin, and the reason is almost always that they are quotes for different products. Before comparing price, line up the material, the louver size, the frame style, the finish, and who is installing. Our breakdown of [what drives shutter cost per window](https://insights.elizabethshutters.com/blog/shutter-cost-per-window) walks through each one.

Then see the sample in your own light. Palm Springs sun is unforgiving, and a finish that looks right under showroom lighting can read very differently against your trim at four in the afternoon.

I would rather you ask five companies four hard questions than take anyone's word that they are the best, including mine. The companies that build a good shutter enjoy those questions. The ones that do not will change the subject.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Who makes custom shutters in Palm Springs?

Several kinds of companies do. Local manufacturers in the Coachella Valley include Sullivan's Shutter Factory and The Shutter Guys & Blinds. National retailers such as Budget Blinds and 3 Day Blinds sell shutters there. California manufacturers such as Elizabeth Shutters build elsewhere in Southern California and install in Palm Springs.

What is the best shutter material for desert heat?

In our experience, whole basswood with a quality acrylic finish holds its shape best through dry heat, and it can be adjusted or repaired later. Synthetic shutters resist moisture, which matters less in a dry climate, and they are heavier and generally cannot be repaired.

Do wood shutters warp in Palm Springs?

Properly kiln-dried whole wood with a quality finish typically holds up well in dry heat. The risk is highest in glue joints and thin finishes, which is why the material and finish questions matter more in the desert than anywhere else.

What louver size works best for a mid-century modern home?

Large louvers, 4.5 or 5.5 inches, suit mid-century modern homes. They give fewer slats, a cleaner sightline through glass walls, and a more open view to the outside.

What should a shutter warranty cover?

A useful warranty states what is covered, what is excluded, and who performs the service. Ask whether it is full or limited, whether the finish is included, and whether the company that sold the shutters is the one that comes back to fix them.

Do shutters keep a Palm Springs home cooler?

Yes, closed shutters reduce heat at the window. They are not the largest factor, though. The glass comes first, exterior shading second, and interior window treatments third.

Does Elizabeth Shutters serve Palm Springs?

Yes. Elizabeth Shutters builds shutters in Colton, California and provides free in-home design consultations and installation in Palm Springs and across the Coachella Valley.
