## Whole Basswood vs Polywood Shutters: What Holds Up in California Homes

**By Dean Frost, Founder & CEO, Elizabeth Shutters**

Polywood and other synthetic shutters resist moisture, which makes them a practical choice for a wet bathroom with a standard window. Whole basswood is the better material for the rest of the home: it is lighter and stiffer, holds tighter tolerances for smaller light gaps, takes any paint or stain, and can be repaired instead of replaced. Elizabeth Shutters, a Colton, California manufacturer since 1981, builds exclusively with whole basswood.

We build with whole basswood, so read this with that in mind. The comparison below includes the places where synthetic wins, because a fair comparison is the only one worth your time.

Synthetic shutters are marketed hard in California, usually on two promises: moisture resistance and durability. One of those promises holds up in specific rooms. The other depends on what you mean by durable. This guide puts the two materials side by side on the things that affect daily life with shutters: weight, fit, finish, heat, moisture, and what happens when something needs attention years from now.

## What Polywood and Synthetic Shutters Are

**Synthetic shutters** are made from vinyl, PVC, or engineered polymer rather than wood. Some are solid polymer, and some are extruded around aluminum or wood reinforcement to add stiffness. Polywood is a widely marketed brand of synthetic shutter, and many other brands sell similar products under different names.

The core selling point is moisture resistance. Polymer does not absorb water the way wood can, so a synthetic shutter tolerates steam and splashing that would eventually stress a wood finish.

## What Whole Basswood Shutters Are

**Whole basswood shutters** are built from continuous pieces of kiln-dried basswood, with no finger joints inside the stiles, rails, or louvers. Basswood is the lightest and strongest wood used in shutter manufacturing. It machines precisely, takes paint and stain like cabinetry, and can be adjusted and refinished over the life of the home. For how it compares with jointed wood, see [whole basswood vs solid basswood](https://insights.elizabethshutters.com/blog/whole-basswood-vs-solid-basswood).

## Whole Basswood vs Polywood and Synthetic: Side by Side

| Criterion | Whole basswood | Polywood and synthetic |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Weight and stiffness | Light and stiff; large panels stay straight | Heavier and less stiff; often needs reinforcement |
| Light gaps | Tight tolerances, small gaps | Wider gaps and bulkier frames to manage sag |
| Paint colors | Any color, including custom trim matches | Limited color range |
| Stain | Furniture-grade grain | Not possible |
| Custom shapes | Arches, angles, oversize, specialty frames | More limited |
| Repair | Serviceable for the life of the home | Generally not repairable at the component level |
| Direct water exposure | Not suitable | Strong advantage |
| Sustained high heat | Dimensionally stable | Can develop warping and tolerance changes |

## Weight, Sag, and Hardware Stress

Synthetic material is heavier and less stiff than whole basswood. That combination is what drives most of the trade-offs. To keep heavier panels from sagging, synthetic product lines tend to use narrower panels, thicker frames, internal reinforcement, and wider gaps.

Each of those choices changes the look on the wall: more frame, less view, and a bulkier profile. The extra weight also lands on hinges and mounting points every time a panel swings. On a small window, the difference is modest. On the wide openings common in California homes, it is visible and it compounds.

## Light Gaps and Insulation

Synthetic shutters are often marketed on insulation. In our experience, a shutter's insulating value depends as much on fit as on material. Light gaps are also air gaps. A shutter built to tight tolerances, mounted square to its opening, leaks less light and less air than a heavier panel built with room to sag.

The useful question for any company is specific: "What are your gaps at the panel edges and louver ends, and how do you keep them consistent on wide openings?" Ask for the answer, then look at an installed sample in daylight.

## Finish, Color, and Stain

Whole basswood takes any paint color, including a custom match to existing trim, and it is the material that takes stain with furniture-grade grain. That matters in homes with warm wood floors, walnut cabinetry, or any design direction that calls for natural wood tones.

Synthetic shutters are typically offered in a short list of colors and cannot be stained. If the plan is a white shutter in a white room, that may not matter. If the plan is a stained finish or an exact trim match, the decision is already made. Our [custom color matching](https://elizabethshutters.com/shutter-color-choices-and-mounting/) options cover the full range.

## Heat and Moisture in California and Nevada

### Coastal homes

In Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, and the Bay Area, marine-layer humidity cycles every day. Whole basswood with a quality acrylic finish handles coastal humidity in normal living spaces. Synthetic handles it too. The difference shows up in the other criteria: weight, fit, finish, and repair.

### Inland and desert homes

In the Inland Empire, the Coachella Valley, the Sacramento Valley, Las Vegas, and Reno, the stress is dry heat, UV, and wide daily temperature swings. Synthetic materials can develop warping and tolerance changes in sustained high-heat window exposures, particularly on large south- and west-facing windows. Kiln-dried whole basswood stays dimensionally stable through the same conditions.

### Wet rooms

A window that takes direct water every day, such as one inside a shower enclosure, is where synthetic earns its place. Wood finishes are not designed for daily direct water.

## Repairability and Long-Term Cost

The purchase price is not the total cost. The total cost includes what happens in year eight, when a hinge loosens, a louver loses tension, or the house settles. A whole basswood shutter gets a service visit: hinges tightened, louvers re-tensioned, panels realigned, finish touched up or fully refinished.

Synthetic shutters generally cannot be repaired at the component level. When a part fails, the conversation tends to move toward replacement. That is worth weighing alongside the quote. See our [shutter repair and maintenance guide](https://insights.elizabethshutters.com/blog/shutter-repair-maintenance) for what servicing wood shutters involves.

## Where Synthetic Is the Right Call

Synthetic is the practical choice for a bathroom with daily steam or direct water contact, a standard-size window, and a simple painted look. In that specific room, its moisture resistance outweighs the trade-offs, and we will say so in a consultation.

It is not the right material for a whole home, for any window where proportion and fit matter, for stained finishes, or for homeowners who want shutters they can service for decades.

## The Verdict

For living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, and street-facing windows, whole basswood is the better material. It is lighter and stiffer, fits tighter, finishes in any color or stain, stays stable in desert heat, and can be repaired for the life of the home. For a wet bathroom with a standard window, synthetic is the practical exception. For the full ranking across every material, read our [best material for shutters guide](https://insights.elizabethshutters.com/blog/best-material-for-shutters).

I don't tell people synthetic shutters are never right. I tell them where they belong. A shutter is something you live with every day for twenty years, and the material should be chosen for the rooms you actually live in.

**Dean Frost, Founder & CEO, Elizabeth Shutters**

Compare the two materials in your own light. A designer brings whole basswood samples to your home, measures every opening, and builds a quote on the real build.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Are Polywood shutters better than real wood shutters?

Not for most rooms. Polywood and other synthetic shutters resist moisture, which suits wet bathrooms. Whole basswood is lighter and stiffer, holds tighter tolerances, takes any paint or stain, and can be repaired, which makes it the better material for living spaces.

Do synthetic shutters warp in heat?

They can. Synthetic materials can develop warping and tolerance changes in sustained high-heat window exposures, especially on large south- and west-facing windows in desert and inland climates. Kiln-dried whole basswood stays dimensionally stable in the same conditions.

Can Polywood or synthetic shutters be stained?

No. Synthetic shutters cannot be stained and are usually offered in a limited color range. Whole basswood is the material that takes stain with furniture-grade grain continuity.

Can synthetic shutters be repaired?

Generally not at the component level. When a synthetic part fails, replacement is often the only option. Whole basswood shutters can have hinges tightened, louvers re-tensioned, and finishes refinished over the life of the home.

Are synthetic shutters more energy efficient than wood shutters?

Not by material alone. A shutter's insulating value depends heavily on fit, because light gaps are also air gaps. A well-fitted whole basswood shutter with tight tolerances performs well. Ask any company how it controls gaps on wide openings.

Which shutter material is best for a bathroom?

Synthetic is the practical choice for a bathroom window that takes daily steam or direct water. For bathrooms with normal ventilation and no direct water contact, whole basswood with a quality acrylic finish works well.

How do whole basswood and Polywood shutters compare on price?

Pricing depends on window count, sizes, shapes, and frame style, so the only reliable comparison is two written quotes for the same openings. Compare total cost over the life of the home, including whether the shutters can be serviced instead of replaced.
